North Sea Ferry Weather

Newcastle to Stavanger -

The Ferry Sails from Newcastle at 1830HRS and arrives at Stavanger around 1300HRS the following day.

The Graphs show the wind and wave conditions expected en route for a ferry departing Newcastle this evening and arriving at Stavanger the following day. Conditions are for open waters

What does it all mean?

The wind speeds are in knots and the directions show the direction the wind is blowing from. The green line represents the wind speed at 10 metres above the sea surface and the blue line represents the winds at 50 metres. Strong gusts will show as a dotted red line. A ferry mast is around 30 metres above sea level, so you can anticipate deck level winds to between the green and blue line. The wave heights are measured in metres. The significant wave height or sig height is the mean height of the larger waves, and the Max height represents the height of the largest waves. The swell height is shown by a dotted red line. The Wave period represents the frequency of the waves passing through. In general terms short period waves between 3 and 6 seconds will have little effect on the ferry motion. Wave periods of 8 seconds and above will affect the motion, and depending on the direction will cause an increase in the pitch roll and heave of the ferry.
